I'm looking to go to Peru for two weeks and want to trek the Inca trail whilst I'm there...?

can anyone recommend tour operators or should I book each segment of the trip independantly? What else can I do whilst in Peru?

Dont use the tour operators they will rip you off,go straight to cusco and book it there.
if you only have 2 weeks you have a choice of walking it or catching the train,if you are a student you can purchase the train ticket at reduced rates at the railway station.
other places to see are lago tittacia ,the highest lake in the world.
colca canyon at arequipa.
the nazca lines.
there are many things to see and do but im afraid 2 weeks isnt very long.

Best thing to do is get yourself to Cuzco, and do it all from there. When I went you could just get the train to Aguas Calientes and walk up to Machu Picchu, but it's all done by tours these days to control numbers of visitors. Naturally the prices has risen sharply over the last few years!
So much to do in Peru, and loads to do round Cuzco - loads of Inca ruins to visit - Ollyatatambo, Sacsayhuaman, Pukapukara, etc. Lake Titicaca is excellent too - great for fish curry and to visit the Isla Del Sol.
Arequipe in the south of Peru is great too - a little oasis in the desert. Nazca is awesome, especially if you can afford a private plane flight, but try to see the Nazca lines, and the Candelabra - you'll b amazed. There are other ruins of pe-columbian civilisations in the north near the Equador border. Then you also have the Amazon region - go pirhana fishing, and tours through the rainforest! A little Spanish may help!!!

One thing you do need to beware is the plan by the Peru government to restrict numbers on that trek; they may have started to do so already. If so it will be too late to wait until you get to Cuzco, the places will be long gone.

There are apparently other, similarly demanding and spectacular treks in Peru - though obviously not to Macchu Picchu which is presumably an objective (though as another correspondent advises, you can visit the latter by train from Cuzco, a not-to-miss city in its own right).

The Inca Trail has become so crowded, I understand it is not very pleasant to hike these days. However, Peru is a fabulous place to visit and you can get plenty of hiking in, even just around Cusco. I heartily agree with the person who suggested you take a train to Machu Picchu (and plan to spend a couple nights there as it is a lot to absorb. There are several hikes within the reserve.)
