This stain is a form of lime scale. soak it in a cleaner designed for eliminating lime scale. Harpic do one and I bet Cilit Bang have one. Soaking in bleach only whitens the scale, it does not get rid of it.
There is probably a tablet of some sort to put int the cistern which could stop lime getting into the toilet bowl. Ask at a good hardware store.

Oh dear I have thrown four toilet brushes out now and couldn't understand why the orange brown stain appeared. We used to have a water softener installed now gone and can't afford a new one. Now I can see it is due to hard water. Real annoyance. Thanks everyone for the answers.

I'd recommend getting rid of the old style brush and buying one of the long handled types with disposable, flush-away pads. Not only are they easier to keep clean, the pads contain a strong cleaning agent and they're flushable. Some also contain a lime-scale removing chemical as well. Not only that, but it also means you don't have a smelly, germ-infested brush laying around in your bathroom !

rest room bowl cleanser. The liquid form it really is provided contained in the flat bottle with the tilted neck. I have tremendous problematical water and had a nasty buildup because i do not favor to apply harsh cleaners. I placed a million/2 bottle contained in the rest room, left it there after I went to artwork. Did it again the subsequent day, it quite somewhat did the interest after 2 remedies.

Just leave the brush in it's holder, in bleach, overnight. Works a treat.

The orange stain you are referring to is from fluoride in the water.
Soft Scrub with bleach helps prevent the discoloration.

I tend to leave the toilet brush sitting in its holder with bleach in it and it works for me.

eugh! I cant stand toilet brushes. Its like leaving bits of poo and wee in a cup next to your toilet. get one of the ones with disposable ends that you flush down the pan.
