Most zoos are part of the AZA (Association of Zoos & Aquariums) and they have an Accrediation process which includes inspections. Their website has information about the Accrediation.

There is governmental agency assigned to do zoo inspection. In US, the U.S. Department of Agriculture inspects zoos and has the authority to close those that are substandard in relations to the animal welfare.

Worldwide, the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) affiliates which extend aid to zoo animals also takes a role to ensure that animal welfare is being upheld.

There are also other organizations who specialize in maintaining high standards of care for and preventing cruelty to animals in private care or at Zoos. Check out this link for details:http://www.phalafala.org/resources.html#wefare

Hope it helps.♥

The Animal Quarantine Inspection Officer. He /she goes to inspect the zoo and check if the basic requirements have been met, i.e. cleanliness, vaccination of animals, etc.
