We display certain mannerisms and behaviors which can be attributed to our past conditioning. Why is it relevant to go beyond these "personality masks"? Wouldn't that render us helpless?

Only to the point that the "Mask" is untrue to the underlying behavior.
Yes, we all show a face to the world that is a mask.
But the underlying strength of personality is the important thing.
Only if your "Mask" is beyond your capabilities is that a problem.
If you have strength in your convictions and your understanding,
you will not be helpless.

It "depends"

Dependency over one idea could be so absorbing that it becomes very hard to detach. So naturally many people tend to stay to their own ground.

However, for those who thinks it's revelant to go beyond such safe ground can only be inspired through one concept. Curiosity. People wanted to see new things, experience new things, or just simply become new. Some people can risk themselves just because they wanted to try out being new. So usually curiosity makes such changes revelant.

It does render us helpless in some ways, but if you failed to go beyond the normal that one resides, then the experience used to counter against the factors that changes our masks becomes so limited that we would one day be absorbed by the stronger.

So it's either risk to save oneself, or failure to experience to fail oneself.

One of the best ways to understand human nature is to look at the behaviors of other closely related animals. So much of what we do is because of our innate fear and aggression towards strangers, preference for blood kin, tendency to find meaning in random events, etc.

Your true nature is Unconditional love, that is the essence of your being. No you would simply be doing Gods will.Accept your present state, then you can practice living in the "now". Don't look back.Practice unity awareness, all things are God, Even if you don't understand fully.Know yourself,be yourself, fix your vision on God.

"True nature" is nothing bad. First of all try to react on it. Try to find out what "Your" true nature tries to say You.

If You know this truly You can start to cultivate it.

Otherwise You can grow to a slave of Your true nature.

Humans are mammals, animals. So to an extent, we have instinct. But our brains are mapped differently and we supposedly are of higher intelligence. I'm not sure what our true nature is. There are so many types of cultures that plan a huge part in our living. Animals have species only, not cultural differences. They live to survive and to breed. That's basically it. They could care less about the rest of the world. Humans live to survive but kill their own kind for defense and for pleasure. Animals never kill for pleasure and it's very rare to kill their own kind. I think it's only some insects and spiders that kill their mate after mating to provide themselves with food for their eggs. Humans are self-deemed higher than animals but we are killing animals to the point of extinction for no reason and we are killing ourselves. I see our higher intelligence as a hinderance as we have pride, greed, lust, gluttony and sloth as temptations to get in our way of survival.
