Republicans tend to take a simplistic view of things. Lower taxes for the wealthy and those who donated to their campaigns, spend heaps (but fudge the numbers so everything balances), act recklessly and in a belligerent manner- and generally act in the most dis honourable and un ethical way possible. Coated in a nice neat shell of "family values" and *cough, cough* religious fevor.
Democrats tend to raise taxes but try not to hurt the poorer areas of the populous. Their holy grail is free health care for all, which has been somehow impossible owing to the Republicans charges that it will cost too much.
We Democrats tend to focus on repairing the damage the previous Republican administration has done, whilst trying to make things on the domestic front better. Often leading to the charge that we don't care about defence, which is ridiculous when you consider President Clintons actions in Bosnia.
Okay, so our Presidents get caught in the odd sex scandal- but a bit of hanky panky is all par for the course. I guarantee you all Presidents have had a bit on the side- its just many haven't been caught.
The Republicans don't listen to public opinion, are arrogant, pig headed and generally pander to the more racist, extreme elements in American society. I.e. Where the majority of votes are.
The Democrats want to make the world and America better in every way, they are more economically and environmentally minded- and they'd rather negotiate than enter a mindless war. (Vietnam aside.)

This is the way I understand it:
Democrats believe in giving a man a fish, essentially a welfare society - providing ways to take care of those in need - the unemployed, the disabled, sick, homeless, etc.
Republicans believe in teaching a man to fish. They don't believe in handouts, but expect people to work for their keep.
In theory both ideologies have their pros and cons. However, I think in reality party politics often come in the way of execution of both ideals. At the crux of every disagreement the issue is always with money.
With the democrat ideology everyone ends up paying more in taxes to bail their fellow countrymen, while the democrats tend to allege that republican agenda favours the rich and doesn't take care of the poor.

Democrats are generally considered more liberal, while Republicans are more conservative. Republicans and Democrats, in general terms, disagree on quite a lot of issues; however, the biggest difference between the two parties are their views on the role of government. Republicans advocate states rights, while Democrats prefer a stronger central government.

Republicans are for the rich people and big oil companies. They give tax breaks for the top 5%
Democrats are for the middle class and poor people.

In very simple terms, one is an idealist, the other is a realist.
A democrat will reason that we need more welfare money for the homeless to get them back on their feet, while a republican will argue that more welfare money will just buy the homeless person more liquor.

Dems want to give the 'poor people' things, pay for their rent, food, utilities...forever.
Republicans want to give them a helping hand, for a while, but make them learn to be self sufficient in return.
Dems want to negotiate with everyone, including Osama & Kim.
Republicans know you can't negotiate with someone one who wouldn't live up to an agreement anyway.
