i played and built for two MUDs a while back, but i don't MUD anymore. it's amazing how much time they take from you, especially since you usually have to pay rent.
the two i played were Age of Dragons and Clefts of Dimensions, both are easy to find on the mudconnector link the second answer gave.
they are different systems, AoD is circle, and CoD was something newer, i forget what it's called.
i do not recommend playing by telnet - in fact, if anyone wants my ZMUD - just email me, and i'll send you my password (first person only, obviously). i bought it years ago, and it's a one time fee, good forever. i don't want to ever be able to mud again, because i spent over 9 hours a day playing. for years. i even skipped family dinners so that i could mud.

If you want a good text based browser game, I would check out MythicReign. It is a brand new game, lots of pvp and other activities as well such as quests, guilds, and daily challenges. What you're looking for are MUD's (Multi-User Dungeons, predecessors to MMORPG's)... Although I'm not a fan of them (darn graphical interfaces & modern MMORPG's), I know about them.
You can go to http://www.mudconnect.com to find a directory of MUD's you can try out (including P2P ones, which you'll probably want to avoid).
Please be aware that you'll need to use Telnet OR a MUD client (a program designed to work well with MUD's) to play them. Other than that, good luck & enjoy!
