can any one tell me how people become a pro tennis player ? I mean it is really confusint, ATF , APT and all that. is it compulsory to have some national ranking before one can become pro ? or is it compulsory to play ATF tournaments before one can play ATP tournaments ?

Essentially once you except more money then your expenses are you become a professional. As far as working your way up the rankings . Simply it is like a layer cake. You start out with the challenger circuit( the least amount of prize money ) , you accumulate ATP points if you do well which allow you to get in to the bigger tournaments. The further you get in tournaments the more points you accumulate which raises your ranking. This is a simple explanation , but should help.

A junior player goes from playing local state tournaments, and if he is good enough he advances to regional tournaments. The few that go past that can start playing national tournaments, and ITF tournaments. (International Tennis Federation not ATF) Only the successful ITF players go on to play on the ATP Tour or WTA tour. ATP is the mens tour, WTA is the womens tour. Those that are not quite good enough to play professional, go to college to improve some before they try and go pro. The ITF is basically the guiding body in tennis, it decides the guidelines that a world wide tournament uses.
