I am remodeling my master bath. The maintenance and non-maintenance horror stories are enough to make me shy away from anything other than a plain old tub. BUT it'll be a higher end bathroom and I think a normal tub will look cheap when I go to eventually resell.

This is of course your choice, here's the "but": I spent a fortune installing a jacuzzi and now neither I nor my wife can use it due to health. I almost Had a heart attack in mine. So, it sits there.

It takes more water to take a bath in. I had to install special shower curtains for it. I'm sorry I ever put it in. It looks Nice, then I start explaining to people why we don't use it.

We have to use different cleaning agents so we don't ruin the finish. It does smell if not cleaned all the time. We run Epsom salts through the water to clean it every few months. The water from a bath gets in the jets. Bacteria build up and smells.

You can also select a garden tub, which looks like a jacuzzi tub only it has none of the bubbling pipes. Selecting this type of tub will appeal to the larger person who enjoys baths, folks just looking for a certain look, and those who don't take baths but want others to think they are fancy.

For someone who takes baths, there is no substitution for the bubbles. However, most buyers don't take baths so the jaccuzzi itself is wasted.

I too have heard horror stories about mold and smells coming from the piping on jaccuzzi tubs, because there is no way to drain the piping to the jets. I decided to stay away from them. I think if you do a classic tub with higher end fixtures and shower heads it will still look very good. The faucets are what draws the eye in the tub anyway.

Most suppliers of whirlpool tubs offer the same tub, but without the whirlpool plumbing and they call them soaker tubs. They are considerably less expensive without the pump and piping, and you can get the look you're after without the worry. Personally, I went with a Kohler whirlpool based on consumer reports and because I have back problems.

A jacuzzi tub is much better of course. You have the bubbles to calm you. And they look so expensive, when you sell your house you will get more for it.
