you need a program called eiter swap magic 3.3 or 3.6 (original pressed disk) and a copy of usdadvance or a pressed copy of usbextreme. if you use swap magic
1. plug drive into pc and format to ntfs
2. then load usbadvace pc client (available off the usbextreme web site (www.hdloader.com)
3. format the drive again using afore mentioned program
4. put ps2 disk into pc dvd rom drive and choose this drive on the left side of the program window and choose your usb drive on the right side of the program.
5. give the game a name and click start.
6. go into windows explorerand make a folder called swapmagic
7. copy the usbadvance .elf file into this and rename it smboot01.elf
8. plug drive into ps2 boot up with swap magic and then when loaded press up and l1
9. usb advance will take about 3 mins to find your drive and thenshow you your games.

warning the usb drive has only about a 30% compatability list for a more detailed list check out http://www.phpbb88.com/usbadvance/

ignore the compatability list from dirtyaperv as this is for internal harddrives and you cant use one of those without a network card and they are about as rare as hens teeth these days

having had a look around you need to make sure that your portable hard drive is actually compatible with the ps2
