legally you actually can't do that, because you do not have or claim title to the sock. The rightful owner of the sock could later come back and demand compensation for the cost of his sock under common law conversion. Of course, if he has no idea what happened to the sock and if he can't prove what you did with it, there is nothing he can do. Your defense is abandonment, but a reasonable time must elapse before you may claim this. You have a duty to attempt to notify and contact the rightful owner if you are able.
I would recommend turning it into a magical sock monkey. I can think of no better punishment than to have my possessions crafted into dolls for leaving them on other people's porches. This would be considered a conversion as well under common law principles.
Enjoy your sock and may you find another one just like it

You need to carry out a variety of tests first.
a) visual inspection: check for holes / stains / worn parts.
b) sniff test: using a clear nose, smell the aforementioned garment and check for any particularly pungent smells or odours.
c) wall test: the standard practice for all underwear items. Throw briskly against a wall and check "stickability"
Using the above tests, evaluate your results before deciding if the item is sellable. I would imagine there will be a buyer out there for any type of sock. Unless it's green.

If you can find someone who will buy an abandoned sock, more power to you.

I think you should "shoe" it off the porch and hope it goes away.

The republican party is on a downward transition, they could probably use it for their members and you could deduct it off of your taxes.
