Technically they CAN fly, but only for a few seconds. They much prefer to run (..at speeds up to 17 mph). The roadrunner is also known as the Chaparral and is the state bird of New Mexico.

Roadrunners can fly, they just run most of the time to catch prey and run away from predators. They can fly onto a cactus to scout for prey.

i used to live in arizona and saw plenty of roadrunners, never saw one fly...they use their wings like a chicken or turkey would.

actually- no.
They can glide when they run fast enough....yet not really "fly".
