Unfortunately, there's no sure fire way to induce labour, unless you go into hospital and they do it. I have heard loads of ways to get labour to start and I tried them all when I was pregnant with my son. There's fresh pineapple, hot (not too hot) bath, sex, going for walks, curry, and raspberry leaf tea (this tasted horrible). As I said, I tried them all and none worked.... I finally went into labour 10 days overdue.

She needs to just deal and you need to get over it (sorry to be so blunt) That baby will be born when he/she is ready, and not before. She is driving herself crazy, nevermind you, you need to be loving and supportive, give her a massage and thank her for carrying your child, it's hard work.

When she reaches over 40 weeks, some things you could try would be sex (prostoglandins in the semen can help to soften the cervix and and orgasm for her can start contractions), nipple stimulation as long as she doesn't have any blood disorders, you do this by playing with the nipples, or massing the breasts, this releases oxytocin which in turn causes contractions (how both my labors started!) Castor oil, 2tbsp mixed with orange juice, although be careful with this, taking too much will cause bad diareah and dehydration. Massaging her belly could cause a few contractions, if things are ready to roll already then it could help. Really though there's nothing you can do unless the baby decides it's time, and rushing things is not healthy. She's only 38 weeks, she could have a whole month left, you need to be patient and loving, she is having a hard time and right now time has nearly stopped for her, egging her on about having the bbay soon won't help her relax.

Sex works (there is a scientific reason behind this by the way, not jut myth) but be careful. Sex caused my waters to break with my first pregnancy. A cervical sweep (by my doctor) did it with the second. But both times I had very long, painful labours. They say that when they induce labour with drugs you are more likely to have a long, painful labour but in my experience the same was true. I'm not planning on having a third but if I did I would definitely just wait it out the next time!

Your wife needs to understand that inducing labor before the baby is ready can be dangerous to the baby and not so good for her either. I understand how uncomfortable the end of pregnancy can be (had 4 myself, and went 3 weeks past due with one - during a heat wave!)

Labor tends to begin when the BABY is ready. The baby/placenta unit begins to release a hormone, which in turn triggers other hormones which cause labor to begin. This whole current craze of inducing labors has led to a big increase in the number of premature babies, and babies that need extra medical care simply because they were not ready to be born. Being born even a couple of weeks too early can cause poor suck, leading to feeding difficulties. There is also increased risk of jaundice and infection. Medical induction (with drugs) frequently leads to a failed induction, or fetal distress. Inducing greatly increases a woman's chance of ending up with a C-Section - and all the increased risks that entails.

You can read some about inductions here:
http://www.midwiferyservices.org/infoforparents.htm#induction
There is also info on C-Sections too.

Try to be sensitive and encouraging for your wife, and remind her that the safest place for your baby right now is inside of her, at least until the baby is ready to be born.

Her best bet is to be patient. I know she is probably miserable but the baby needs to come when it's ready unless it is overdue and it's not. I have heard sex induces labour if it is time. Good luck.

Try to get her to relax. If she feels well it's better to keep busy. Only a doctor can induce labour. Good luck !

Recent studies have shown that sex does not work, but unless she knows this you could tell her sex sometimes works if you are in the mood (but it sounds like you are being driven crazy so....). Nipple stimulation seems to be the only proven thing left. Tell her not to be so anxious, i know it is hard, but the baby knows when s/he is ready, so just wait. Good luck!

its hard but tell ur wife that when the babies lungs are fully developed then he will come. the doctors just guesstimate at how long uve been pregnant theres no way they can tell the exact date of conception. my baby was 11 days past his due date and my doc offered to induce me at 39 wks but i said no. just encourage your wife. but if shes desperate try sex, nipple stimulation or ask the doctor to scrape her membranes

look up nipple stimulation on the web. Please be very careful though as it will produce violently strong, quick contractions that will lead to true on her own labor if the time is right.
(It does take about an hour of this to get them going though and that is a long time of nipple stimulation, for me anyway.)
