lol i'm always up for answering this question.

The best was Jimi Hendrix. The man could do stuff no other man could do or will probably ever be able to do on a guitar. So a lot of people don't like his music. That's about taste, not about talent. Hendrix had more talent than anyone else and that is why he was the best. I don't even particularly like his stuff, but i can admit it.

Second Best and always deserving of a mention is Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers. Was one of the most innovative guitarists of his time and was destined to continue to play the stuff he was admired by his peers for playing. He was taking the guitar to new place and it's such a shame he died so young. Not too many people give him any credit, but the allman brothers were a great band and he did play that riff at the start of Layla, which i'm sure you all know what i'm talking about.

As usual i'll mention a few others. Jimmy page, Slash, Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, Chet Atkins, The Edge, Tom Petty, Peter Green. The list goes on, but it's always Hendrix and Allman 1 and 2 for mine.

The greatest is Jimmi Hendrix because he was a pioneer in rock and roll for his style. As far as technique goes, Eric Clapton and Eddie VanHalen are living legends.

Every genre has a great. I think in the blues field - JJ Cale, BB King, Clapton, etc are at the top.
In the rock genre, I think Steve Vai, Hendrix, Angus young, etc are there.
In country style, theres Chet Atkins, even Mark Knofler.

Depends on the genre I think, but overall, my favorite was always Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Clapton said Billy from ZZ Top was the greatest blues guitarist on the planet...that counts for something too I think. :)
