To be more specific, do gay themed books sell just as well as your typical "straight" novel? Is there currently a demand for gay/lesbian writers out there? I ask because I have a friend who wants to become a writer and he's gay, but I feel he would have more success (selling more books) if his fiction works were written for the general public, a book anyone can pick up and read and recommend to a friend. Not a book that is specifically gay themed. Am I wrong or right or have some good points on the subject?

There is demand for Gay literature, especially of a good quality. If it's a fast buck you're after then you are better off making your literature more 'general' public orientated. I'll be honest as a gay man I have only read a hand full of specific gay orientated books. Not because I don't have the interest, but they are not as access able and often not as good quality as other books. Having said that, it probably is an area that needs more support and therefore if someone has the interest, go for it as he might achieve the goal of getting some gay literature accepted into the more 'general' market!

I've been writing a gay-themed novel for a few months now and am 95% sure that it's done. Hopefully that qualifies me to answer your question.

This might come-off as harsh; but, it is not intended to be. You, as a friend, should be supportive to him writing a book, no matter what genre it is. Gay fiction is fiction! By saying "written for the general public," you mean to say write a heterosexual novel, right? Sort of like taking writing "back into the closet?"

He, as a writer, should write for the sake of writing, without a care for salability. Writing is an intense process; but, in our age, it is not recommended at all to "quit your day job" to write due to the limited publishing contracts, et cetera.

I realize that you "mean well" and have concern for your friend, but your role as a friend is to support him, which includes (a) telling him it's okay to write what he wishes to write and (b) reminding him that salability isn't the goal--it's the act--it's the art.

There are venues available for any themed literature. If what your friend writes is a good enough piece of work then it should sell well to anyone no matter what the sexual preference is.

For good works...gays are a tremendous market..the straight world is still just realizing that..We are probably one of if not the most lucrative markets out there...We have the disposable income..no kids to raise for most of us......And gays can be incredibly supportive of a fellow gay person..

It may sell out because people would want to know more about what they have severally heard but not as much as heterosexual literatture because this is the normal system of sexuality. Gay I may term as " misdirected feelings"

Well, considering 95-97% of the population is NOT gay, he might want to consider another career. That is, unless he plans to write about straight people.

If he specifies a subject, than he must expect to be read by mostly those who are interested in that subject.

But... if he is driven, then that is a creative inspiration. Inspiration should not be lead by popularity or cash....ever.
