I use to work in an agency and im working in a new temp role through an agency with crap pay because the agency take a given percentage out of my pay.
What they do is call you if the recruitment consultant is interested in your C.V. and if they believe you are well suited for the job. At this point they will call you to tell you that they wish to put your C.V. forward (providing you are interested as well).
Once that is done they send your C.V. to the potential employer and if the employer is interested further, they (the agency) will call you. If not, they wont call you.
I think they should still call you even if you werent successful, its rude not too...they only benefit if you get the job though.

Depends if its a temporary or permanent job. If its temporary the agency doesnt get so much commission, and they will have commited to providing an employee to their client, so you may find they offer the job to 2 or 3 people just to make sure they get someone, then let the others down.
If its a permanent role, the agency is on to much better commission and they are far more likely to be attentive, also you would normally be interviewed by the employer as well as the agency so you would have a far better idea what stage you are at in the process and what is going on.
I would recommend using a different agency as there are some really good recruitment companies out there, but some really dreadful ones too as you have discovered.
Good luck with the job hunting.

There are some eventualities when you're employed through a temp or staffing agency: a million. you'll fairly get an entire time interest. Its their artwork to hunt on your employment. The opportunities for artwork will be constrained to the businesses they are affiliated to. yet reliable project about that is that because you're seen a "agency" for them - they'll make sure you're employed. 2. most of the time, they'll be asking you to list to their agency. each and each and every time a subject matter arises inclusive of your agency - its frequently the agency who deals with it. 3. Your repayment would accept through the agency. meaning any gross income minus agency fee (placement fee) will be your information superhighway take living house pay. * only a concept: have you ever tried making use of on your own? Why not deliver resume and note in case you may get a interest on your own? this can take a lengthy time period although the opportunity of you earning extra will propose no placement fee.

Ive never done temp work but have got 2 permanent jobs through an agency. I applied online and had to have an interview with the agency, in my case as It was out of town they sent an agency rep to my town and we met up in a pub, They kept in contact through phone & email and I started my 1st job soon after, the 2nd job I used the same agency, a couple of years later, I emailed them my CV and was sent for an interview at the company with the vacancy. They again kept in touch through email and phone and I stared the job last May
Ive applied with a couple of other agencies and have had to go into the agency office to complete interview, typing & general knowledge tests.
