Ur right apache,she has been highly over-rated despite the flaws in her singing which have been showing for many years now,and also the flaws in her personality.Not only has she been "not a person of ethics " as u correctly pointed out,she has not been a good human being at all.Her jealousy of her own sis Asha is not hidden from anyone.
My point is,until and unless an artist,a performer is of a good heart and intentions,he can never be an artist at all.
Lata at the best was a manipulator,business and political,and thank god,we wont see much of her now,thanx to current music directors who wont take her.

Good Question!!! I will actually take a neutral stance. No doubt that she happens to be one of the great singers in the indian music industry, but she is not the only one we have seen.
Actually India has certain characterisitics which are different from other parts of world. We will always take it for granted that old is gold. I mean when a new face arrives, we generally will say s/he is not the capable person(comparing with some older guy), but 15 years down the line, we generally tend to tag that person as the best in Job. I agree that experience counts, but you need to have some skills too.
I am very sure that 7-8 years from now and people will start talking the same way about Alka too.
I will say Lataji is great singer, she deserves some rewards but not all!

Lata's ethics can be questioned but so can anyones ethics but her voice and talent can not she is unquestionably the greatest indian singer and maybe the best female singer of all times and races.
look at R. Kelly he is not my idol but i love his music and i will continue to buy it. Lata is getting those awards because she deserves it plain and simple.

In independent India awards are more by political backing and your ability to finish of any possible rival.She has sufficient political patronage so she can get any award.There are several gems lying around here but they are not given any thing.

Award is for her voice, and achievements. Not her ethics. So yea she is getting it.
Besides, lots of artist do have the dark side of them, they do get awards as well, for things they are good at, actors, actress.
Its more about one of the side they achieved rather that everything in life.
