i lived in tempe for about 5 years and i learned that the farther away from the college you are-the safer you are.
your best bet at being safe if you are going to school at asu is to live in the dorms themselves.
l currently live near an apartment complex that a few of my friends live in called lakefront at west bay and they aren't bad at all. i lived there myself for 4 years. they are older but each new apartment has new carpet, kitchen countertops, cabinets and appliances. rent will run you from about 650 for a one bedroom and around 700 for a two bedroom. there is a huge lake in the back, a really nice pool, and it's a gated community. it's about 10 mins away from the college. there are alot of college kids in the complex so you might be able to find someone to carpool with and for the most part it's quiet. there have been some nasty reviews about the place-but they were mostly done before the current managment company took over-things are much better there now
there are alot of apartment complexes in that area. best to stay east of mill ave and south of broadway ave to avoid too much crime.
i'll attach a link that might help you out....

There are loads of rentals in the area (since it is the university), plus lots of rental condos from private owners and condos for rent through the university system itself. So you could start by checking with the university about their condo rentals. If you want a roommate, go to the eating hall at ASU and there is a board with postings or pick-up a copy of the campus paper for classifieds rental & rent share listings. Also rentals & rent share listings in the free New Times paper (online as well) or through the AZ republic (online AZ classifieds).
The only non-univ owned places I can think of near Mill Ave are just behind the main Mill strip plaza (back behind where the movies & Uno is at) but I have no idea how expensive they are. Best guess is the cheaper places will be on Rural, or on Mill closer to Southern, or on University closer to Priest. Most of those will require that you have a car or use the bus/ bike to campus rather than walk.
I receommend the following site to review local apartments/ condos:
http://www.rent.com
Be sure to use the My Favorties area because if you end up renting from one of those places you can get a $100 pre-loaded visa reward from the website. For private rentals, craigslist is good in addition to the sites above.

There are a number of them but to list them would be rather difficult... You could see if the Tempe Chamber of Commerce would send you a number of apartment books that are available

I recommend using a realtor or a relocation specialist because their job is knowing where the best deals are and they can help you find exactly what you're looking for (size wise, ammenities, location, price, etc).
Plus, the reputable ones offer their services to you for free. They usually get paid by the property you choose to move into so you don't need to shell out cash for their help. It's a win win situation.
I recommend Troy at Metro Phoenix Relocation - http://www.homes-by-troy.com - or his business partner Craig.

Um Arizona can be a promote off of sand pirates yet were given to be more effective than Nevada with all those mob on-line casino murders piling up on your outdoor. I p.c.. neither ! Kansas they're gentle and paying people to flow there in view that anybody left ! look on the internet... they pay you to stay there at Kansas....awesome.
