This quotation may help,
"Multi-dimensional language is made into one-dimensional language, in which different and conflicting meanings no longer interpenetrate but are kept apart; the explosive historical dimension of meaning is silenced."

Herbert Marcuse, One-Dimensional Man, 1964

Surely this question should be under "philosophy" not "drawing & illustration" because Marcuse was discussing the nature of thought and society not creating images (it is impossible create images in one dimension actually, it is an abstract concept meaning something brought down to its simplest form - one thought, a line.)
Good luck with your assignment!

I read some of the Wikipedia article that the previous answerer gave and it seems that these sociologist/philosphers are one or two notches above my threshold of intelligence.

Or is it "socio-blather-ese?" Jargon taken to the extreme for confounding the reader? It has always been my opinion that a complex concept should, and can, be explained well using standard English, without the jargon. Isaac Azimov was a master in this area. He opened my eyes to many complexities, esp in the department of ancient and modern science.
