Yes you do. You WONT get a teaching job in Japan without a degree.

I have been a teacher here for 3 years and know the qualifications.

Adam says it the straight way and I agree...because coming from outside of Japan trying to land a job is pretty difficult without a degree. If you are just a single bloke with no other way to get a visa, you could come here on a 90 day tourist visa and look for work based on your experience. It will be as someone else said " difficult" at best. they could hire you and sponser you but without that paper you have to realize how unlikely it will be to get the more "desirable" positions. Not impossible mind you but hanging here for a couple months with no work is waaaaaaaaaayy more expensive than being in Thailand. I suggest Vietnam for a change. you can actually save good there without to much work paper formality. Best to go now before they lock that up. Korea is a great place to save but I am not familiar with the ease of sponsorship sans degree.

To obtain a visa as a teacher you need a degree. If you have a student or family visa, etc. then you can work as a teacher without a degree. You would most likely end up working at a sketchy place with no degree, but there are people who own their own schools or whatever without a degree. The authorities are cracking down on the old dodges such as obtaining a student/cultural visa and then not actually attending the classes, diploma mill degrees, or going to the ROK every 90 days and thus endlessly renewing a tourist visa.

You can go to China and teach English easily without a degree but in Japan, they are very strict about it.

I went to the American School in Japan. It's a great place. Look them up online and ask them.
