the only part a motor is needed on a roller coaster is on the very first hill if thats how the ride is designed. once the coaster gets to the top of that hill then gravity takes over and the rest of the hills have to be smaller than the first hill so the ride can make it over with gravitys help ONLY.

now, if you go to california adventure at the disneyland resort in california and ride california screamin, a motor is used to launch the coaster once at the bottom of the hill and no motor is actually used ON the first hill, the following hills are small, except for the middle hill or climax of the ride if you will, that hill uses a motor because it is taller than the first hill.

IN conclusion, a motor is only needed at the beggining of the ride, once the coaster reaches the highest hill, the whole ride is dependent on gravity.

the only motors needed for roller coasters are the motor to run the chain winch to take you up hill, the hydrolic motor to operate the brakes on the cars and the motor to generate the electricity to run the emergency control/lights.fanfareish objects

in some cases there are actually noneed to have a chain driven winch many newer rollercoasters now use linear traction to propel you from zero to 6o in about 4 seconds using nothing but magnets and hydrolics

as far for the older coasters

ive never heard of roller coaster with motor driven cars.

the roller coaster is designed with momentum in mind

thats why theres the hill in the begining

the drop from the hill maybe faster slower farther longer shorter

all depending on the amount of kinetik energy (Motion Energy) required for the car to get from point a to point b

id show you how to do the math but i don't have the figure nor the time to attempt it

but i hope this helped

Depends on the type of roller coaster you are talking about.
Roller coasters with chain lifts have motors to pull the trains ( a train in this case is an group of cars that the riders are in) up the lift hill, or the first hill. Shuttle coasters that go backwards first have them to let the train to have enough speed to get to the other side and back. LIM, and LSM don't usely have motors because they might not need them. Other coaster might have them for different reasons.
