Now, Jonathan itself is a good name. But you have to think ahead. People are too lazy to use the full name. They will call him John, or worse, Johnny. It's not a very unique name. It will make him feel unimportant in the long run. Sure, it might keep him from getting teased in class, but it's depressing to have a name that many other people have, and it gets confusing if someone is calling, "John, John!" Are they calling him or another John? You have to invest in slightly more unique name. Not a bizzare name, just something less common. Something that will make him feel special out in the large world. I'm sorry that I cant give you examples, as I dont know what's common or unique in your area. Just look for a name with more meaning, there are plenty of name books and websites out there. Good luck!

It is a great name. Right now everyone is using such strange names that the only way to be different is to use a traditional name. (And there aren't that many of them--not young ones anyway--Most of the Jonathans are older) My children have traditional names and they are not troubled by everyone having the same name. (unlike the trendy, new ones)

Jonathan is a traditional name of English origin. It means - God gives. It is not a very creative name, but it also isn't likely to cause a young boy to be teased either.

I've always liked that name. I hope to name my first son Joel, and if another should come along, Jonathan would be a consideration.

does it sound ok with the last name? if the combination sounds like something kids will tease in school, then it should be avoided. if the combination sounds great, then i vote for go for it! there are some great places on the internet to look up meanings of babynames as well. jonathan means god gives. best wishes with your new baby.
