Other answers here seem to be approaching this from an individual or legal angle. I have the feeling that you're wondering why we as a nation seem to continue bringing up the horrible injustice of slavery. It's true that it was very wrong the way that they were treated, and then the injustice given to the freed slaves up until the 60s, but it is time to move on. The individual people were the ones "guilty" of owning slaves; we as a nation today should feel regret but not to the extent we seem to today. Hopefully someday we'll stop feeling guilty and realize it was our ancestors and not us as individuals who treated them so poorly.

It's much more complicated than that...You need to research the story more.

You will see that it was not The USA that started in the slavery trade...in fact look up the past History about England and Spain.

Once the USA became independent of Great Britain, it did continue the slave trade but they are not the only guilty ones.

As far as "stop being guilty", no nation should forget what happened but it is time to move on.

When will Egypt start being guilty for having slaves from Israel?
When will the Romans start being guilty for having slaves from Thrace?

Why not worry about slavery happening today, in Saudi Arabia, Mauritania or Ghana?

Well, I have never owned a slave and I don't know anyone alive today who has ever owned a slave. So I guess America is not guilty of having slaves. In the old south some very rich plantation owners had slaves. Most slaves were sold by their own countrymen, A lot of slaves were treated very well like part of the family, some were treated badly. Look in old papers from southern museums and you will see many freed slaves took the last name of their former owners out of respect.

Do you mean, when will white Americans stop feeling guilty about slavery in America? I don't feel guilty. We ended slavery. We established civil rights. Our country is now based on equality of opportunity.

The African-American population needs to start cleaning up their own house. I don't care what color your skin is, I'll hire you if you have the skills and don't have a ghetto attitude. Walk in with your sagging pants and your prison/gang tattoos and an attitude and you can walk right on out. Commit a crime? Go to jail. Pretty simple. I know too many black people who have completely earned my respect through hard work, good morals and values, and a healthy attitude, for me to give a crap about the ghetto trash. That goes for the white trash, too. You see, I'm an equal opportunity cracker.

WE felt guilty?

I never had any slaves and neither did my parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents, so I don't think I have a reason to feel guilty.

Also, all black people living in the USA today have never experienced slavery themselves so they really don't have a damn thing to complain about.

I feel more guilty about what happened to the Indians because they did not truly recover from what white men did, while black folks have had every oppurtunity to recover from their slavery that was abolished well over 130 years ago.

You were never a slave so stop complaining. The current generation is not responsible for past generation's mistakes and there is no reason for anyone living today to feel guilty about something that is long gone and over with that they had no responsibility for.

I for one is sick of hearing about some one who was in slavery, that was over 140 years ago, in America, strange how others who were in slavery one hell of a lot more recent came to this country and have been very successful, yet the majority of the blacks still complain we were in slavery trying to get sympathy, if they got out and did their duty "work" and forget about slavery and getting something for free every one would be better off,cut out welfare except to widows, orphans, and some others who need it temporarily , but not to some one who wants to live indefinitely off of others lab ours,no one should be able to get welfare unless they can prove they will work and it may be a good policy to make them pay back any money they receive once they are gainfully employed, there are one hell of a lot of people in this country who work their butts off trying to make a living , no better than slaves but, you don't hear them crying poor me every time they open their mouths

The USA has not been guilty for having slaves since the country stopped doing that. Once they were legally free, it has become matters of fairness vs. discrimination

When black folks finally realize their corrupt religious leaders just want their cash, not to help them get educated and get ahead in life and they reject their religion and immoral violent philosophy. Until black people learn to behave in a civilized manner Affirmative Action will be necessary to separate the rare little wheats of good students from the prisons and ghettos full of chaff, because how are we to distinguish, when so many are so wrong.

Once you're guilty of something, your guilty. How do you become "unguilty" of something? Being an American, I can't comprehend what was going through their heads back then. It's the ugliest and most evil part of American history.
