The terms are an anachronism from the Cold War, and hasn't been used formally since the 1970s.

The First world is the equivalent of the developed world. The second world was supposed to mean the socialist block - 16 years after the fall of the Berlin all of them are still poorer than the West, but are moving up quickly. The third world is the developing world (although several aren't developing but going backwards).

the term is frequently used to denote nations with a low UN Human Development Index (HDI), independent of their political status (meaning that the PRC, Russia and Cuba, all of which were very strongly aligned during the Cold War, are often termed third world). However, there is no objective definition of Third World or "Third World country" and the use of the term remains common. The term Third World is also disliked as it may imply the false notion that those countries are not a part of the global economic system. Some in academia see it as being out of date, colonialist, othering and inaccurate; its use has continued, however. [1] In general, Third World countries are not as industrialized or technologically advanced as OECD countries, and therefore in academia, the more politically correct term to use is "developing nation"

typically people think this is any country that isn't The west, isn't Europe or doesn't have 'shopping malls'. Interestingly a bunch of 'The reat of world ' organizers were asking people that ,,most students.. answered.. the poeple on 'World vision' and 'Children who don't have television or computers in most home.' sad isn't? that this is what most people think.

The socialistic and communist block in the erstwhile bipolar word is dominated by USSR is now no more wielding its influence against capitalistic countries comprising USA, Britain, France et al., and the third world namely those countries that are not connected in their leaning to either block in the olden days and some of them are covered under the nonaligned concept like India, Yugoslavia et al. Now there is no third world or second world but regional associations of countries like ASEAN, OECD, NATO OPEC etc formed for various reasons such as commercial, regional security, strategy, peace and development on mutual basis or on balance of power relationships. It is really a broad and vast subject.

A Second or Third world country is any country that doesn't meet the standards of human rights and democracy of America, Canada, Austrailia, Britian, etc. as they define it. Mostly, they are countries where dicators rule and the people have absolutely no say in the running of their government. Examples are parts of Africa, South America, Iran, Cuba, and other countries where those who appose the government are either jailed or killed so they cannot interfere with the ruling party.

Political allegiance. Even today these terms are political terms despite disguising them as economical terms.

If a country want a First World status (equivalent of being an Inner Party member in "1984"), the country's goverment have to very obedient and allowed itself to be 'developed'. Then maybe, just maybe, it will get a First World status... maybe.

As we know, the Proles in "1984" are the best class of population. Inner Party and Outer Party members have no freedom and tend to always felt miserable.
