I recently purchased a house and noticed that a particular toilet in the house always smells. I'm not sure if it's the toilet water or the bowl itself or what, but I can't figure it out. I clean the toilet constantly with 409 and Lysol and have tried using the 2000flushes product to clean the toilet bowl water, but nothing seems to help. Does anyone know what could be wrong? The odor that comes from the toilet is extremely bad and only comes from this particular bathroom.

JT: follow your drain line from your bowl and see if there's another line, the air line, that should go to the roof vent. If this toilet was put in after the house was built they may not have put in a vent pipe. This is usually a two inch pipe the comes off the large pipe under the toilet bowl, it goes to the roof to vent the gases from the toilet. It may be plugged with anything from a bees nest to garbage.
If your not able call a plumber, he can clear it with a snake or simply a garden hose. I've done this with both, be careful.

Then again if you don't have a vent pipe for some reason, your in trouble. The plumber of course can install one, or you can have a handy friend do it. It's going to cost you either way, The plumber would be better.

It could be that the wax ring has gone bad and water is leaking into the subfloor resulting in the smell. See if the floor around the base of the toilet seems spongy or if the tiles are lifting.

Replacing the wax ring is a fairly simple proposition, but have it taken care of before the subfloor gets damaged.

I personally think you should re move toilet from its base (easy task.2 bolts one water line) And lift toilet and inspect underneath. You can bleach spray the bottom of the toilet..clean the floor underenth and inspect/replace the wax gasket. It is possible over time that gasket hhas deteriorated or years of urine has splashed over and under the base of the toilet. I al esle fails..buy a new toilet..not tooo expensive..$150 or so

First, clean your toilet bowl really good, with Lysol, or somethimg very powerful. Then Take a bottle of Clorox, and dump about a cup into your toilet. Let it sit there for about 30 minutes. Then you can flush. It should work.

GO BUY A NEW WAX RING AND HAVE IT READY TO REMOVE THE TOILET... IF THE HOUSE IS ABOVE THE GROUND COULD BE A ROTTEN FLOOR? BUT ANYWAYS CHECK TO SEE IF SOMETHING MAYBE DIED IN THE HOLE. OTHER THEN THAT I CAN NOT FIGURE WHAT THIS COULD BE FROM. ALSO LIFT THE TANK LID SEE IF SOMETHING DIED IN IT.
