What I do is that I think of a story idea and just start writing. I usually don't plan it ahead, I just write it and the story veers in the direction it wants to.

Although writing prompts are good if you have writer's block. I used to be big in writing fanfiction a couple of years ago and joined communities on Livejournal that gave you a prompt (a word or idea) and you'd write your story based on that prompt.

Dont know what good typing with the monitor off would do but sometimes when I am getting ready to write a paper or a story or something I think of my topic and then just write down ideas. Everything that comes to my head I write it or type it. Then once I do that I go through and remove all the things that have nothing at all to do with my topic and then once I narrow the list down I start to try and write a little something off of each one till I find the one I can flow from and thats the one I use to write with.

I prefer free-form writing in a journal or notebook, it tends to be where my most organic and interesting ideas come from. I have tried to type with the monitor off...the spelling errors were insane. I think that each writer is different, what may work wonderfully for one could hinder the creativity of another.

Start with a small idea in a flow chart or a web chart. Work with that extending the ideas into bigger and bigger ideas. Or just start writing and keep going and going and going....there will be more time for editing later, then you can keep what you want and get rid of the rest when your done.
