The coverage area should be a factor. If you live in a big city and don't travel often, T-mobile would be fine. Away from big cities though T-mobile's service is often poor. I've had Verizon for 3 years and haven't had problems with service. I have had problems with attempting to change my plan, and the rep never changing it, so I would get overcharged and have to fight with them about getting it corrected. I have threatened to leave them, but they have the best coverage in my area. If your friends have Verizon you wouldn't have to worry about overages if you get a plan with free IN calling. If you will hardly use your phone, Verizon has NO cheap plans. I don't know about T-mobile. Last time I checked they had reasonable plans though.

I have T-mobile and it seems to be the best price. But Verizon has better coverage area. Several times I have been without service while others around me (with Verizon) had service. So, you might want to go with Verizon.

I had Verizon wireless and they have good service/coverage but I think that their rates and overage charges etc. are ridiculous!!! I gave them up and have had T-Mobile for over two years now and I love them! I never have any problems with service/coverage or charges.

Honestly I'd go for newer technology.
Right now New Technology is GSM. 80% of the world is running on GSM. Different frequencies maybe, but still its getting there especially with QUAD band phones. These phones can practially roam anywhere, except Japan.
T-mobile=GSM Yes SIM
Cingular=GSM Yes SIM
Verizon=CDMA No SIM cards. old technology
its your choice. GSM offers newer better phones. + Pocket PC's and high end phone cameras
hope this helps
