Large mulitnational corporations are a large driving force in a country's economics. Take McDonald's for example, if they suddenly pull out of the United States and decided to devote themselves in their international branches, think of how many McDonald's employees would be laid off instantly and shops that would close down. Since they're large, they could seriously reflect in a country's GDP and unemployment rate, among other economic statistics. This could cause severe political unrest in the long run.

No wonder governments have a tendency to favor corporations.

Hope this helps.

Wal-Mart is a rough topic. It boosts economy because its low prices encourage spending. But it is a powerhouse, it is the nations top employer so it can command what competitive wages are, also as a huge supplier it also command prices it is willing to pay for merchandise which also can contribute to what other companies pay their own employees. I personally sort of dislike Wal-Mart but even with their commanding presence they still pay more than some other corporations which is somewhat admirable.
