Dictionary.com defines fiction as "the branch of literature comprising works of narrative prose dealing with or offering opinions or conjectures upon facts and reality, including biography, history, and the essay (opposed to fiction and distinguished from poetry and drama)."
It also defines fiction as "the class of literature comprising works of imaginative narration, esp. in prose form."
Wikipedia also states, "Essays, journals, documentaries, scientific papers, photographs, biographies, textbooks, blueprints, technical documentation, user manuals, diagrams and journalism are all common examples of non-fiction works, and fiction within any of these works is usually regarded as dishonest.
The sole difference seems to be that lyrical poetry is accompanied by music. This originates from Ancient Greece, where lyrical poetry was accompanied by a lyre. Both tell stories (as that is what a narrative is); however, lyrical poetry will have music accompanying it.

that is what on my first da of class my history teacher has asked me. the answer is that non-fiction is based upon truth or history or how things are written down which makes history; the fiction is more of passed down by word of mouth and is not written down as in stone or a document to which we reffer. it takes part truth and part non truth and mixes it up and comes up with non-fiction.
