On my last date, the girl wanted to challenge, debate or argue with me on every single topic. And that's not my style at all. It was hard to tell when she was joking and when she was pissed. She ended up confessing that she liked to fight and argue and didn't really know why. I thought it was a way to commandeer my attention and control my thoughts. But I could be wrong. Any thoughts on why some people are like that?

I am in my 40's and I have known women who wish and wish for a man, then immediately get to complaining about him and giving him a hard time about everything. I think it's some kind of nesting instinct gone horribly wrong.

On the other hand, back in my dating days I was accused a few times of being argumentative when I just thought I was having an interesting discussion. So please take a closer look and see if it is your own insecurity that makes things feel like an argument. I know that in my current relationship of 7 years, he never feels like we're arguing even when we have a spirited debate that results in a handshake and an agreement to disagree.

Some people get off on a fiery debate. It's a way to get the blood going and to test your intellect against someone else's. She probably wasn't trying to make you feel bad or to make herself feel superior; she probably just likes the thrill. I have a liberal friend who once found herself very attracted to a libertarian Republican. She said that she found it intellectually stimulating and very hot to argue politics with him. She knew she couldn't change his mind, and she doesn't have any need to dominate people. It was just a challenge.
