Yes, the FBI through a system known as Raptor. The CIA does not unless you're an employee they suspect of something.. The NSA is the real powerhouse for monitoring any type of transmitted conversations - phone, radio, etc.
Except in cases where a court order is issued (then a person listens in on your converations), the FBI or NSA has computers do this work. The computers compare conversations to a list of "trip words" such as "bomb". If you say "the play was a bomb"
the computer will pick up the word "bomb" and the serious monitoring begins. After a new minutes the system relaizes your talking about a play - monitoring stops. End result of this - your tax dollar was wasted.
There are a number of instances where these systems have been the first step in making criminal/terrorist arrests.
Why are you worried? If you need to "beat this system", used a pay phone.

In Australia it would be the same as America, because I had a friend who was a telephone technician. He told me that sometimes when he goes to fix a problem, there are so many bugs clipped onto the lines that it is difficult to work around them. Not only do they bug your conversations you will be on video almost everywhere you go. Every square metre on this earth is watched by sattelite. Do not be surprised to be on video in the toilet at home and in the bedroom, everywhere. I suspect they have a record of everything on you. But do not be dismayed, for if you are in Jesus Christ, soon you will be lifted up to be with Him. Those left behind must suffer for it is written "if these times were not cut short then no one would survive."

No, but the NSA does.
There is a huge database tracking all electronic communications (cell phone, telephone, internet, etc) bumping the communications up against a list of 'key words'. When a message hits those key words the message is flagged for further review.
The NSA isn't supposed to spy on US citizens, just foreign citizens. Conspiracy theorists believe that the NSA circumvents that through intelligence sharing with our allies.
Example - The NSA has several 'flagged' messages originating from you. At the request of the NSA, Great Britian spys on you and gives that information to the NSA.
This is all conspiracy theory mind you, but quite possible given today's technology.

the possibilities that your telephone conversations are being intercepted by ability of federal regulation enforcement are very small- even though, this occurs greater frequently than one would desire to anticipate. this is not criminal for the government to intercept digital verbal substitute with out judicial authorization. decrease than the regulation, judicial authorization should not be granted different than the place the government makes a exhibiting of in all probability reason that against the regulation is being committed and that the standard sorts of examine have been tried and are not suitable. As useful depend, "call III" intercepts (as they are stated as), are freely granted by ability of the courts and that they are usuually one the 1st techniques employed. additionally, decrease than the U.S. Patriot Act, regulation enforcement would use "national protection letters" to get carry of recommendations from verbal substitute businesses with out having judicial approval the place the recommendations is claimed to be mandatory for national protection. The FBI have been given into distinctive warm water final 3 hundred and sixty 5 days for allegedly utilizing those national protection letters for recurring examine of companion and infants crime. the key is which you shouldn't dedicate federal (or state) crimes- yet once you do, do not talk approximately it on the telephone.

I think phone conversations, emails, and chat-rooms are monitored. Not by humans, but the first level is by computers which reports suspicious activity for human review.
I am a retired state employee who spent the last 12 years of service working as a Computer Security Officer for my state's Public Safety agency.
And yes, I did watch the X-Files.

It is very improbable that there are human beings out there, listening in on your conversations.
However, the NSA does have a program wherein there is a computer or series of computers listening to the conversations. If a buzz word is used, the system clicks into action to record some or all of your conversation.

Yes they do. If the government has cause for suspicioun for wrong doing, they will if they think that they can gain information from the calls. They can't record the calls and use them in court. They can use the information obtained to try and get you to confess to something by pressuring you. If they record a call where one party is aware that the call is being recorded and listened to, that is admissable in court. They will not have cause to do so unless they suspect some sort of illegal involvement.

The rules are that it is illegal for US intelligence assets to 'collect' on 'US persons.'
Of course there are exceptions:
If that person is associated with a foreign intelligence service
If that person is associated with international drug trafficking
If that person is associated with a hostile government or organization
If that person posses a security clearance
And similar circumstances.
For example the 'carnivore' system automatically tracked phone calls made to or from certain telephone numbers that were associated with Al Quaeda.
You gotta admit that it is reasonable for US intelligence services to be suspicious about people who make phone calls to AQ.

not to conversations by Americans to Americans. They monitor conversations from certain overseas calls especially those originating in Muslim nations. Why not? The Muslims are out to get us one way or another so we must be vigilant. If there is an outright war with Muslims, you may be given an alternative: convert to being a Muslim. Pay a ransom. Be killed. It is all there for you to read.
