I am fairly certain that all of the readers of this answers.yahoo have heard or read the phrase the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
This was stolen from a Thomas Paine who said we have the right to life liberty and property.
The founding fathers did not want to give us the right to property so Jefferson took that part out and inserted the right to pursue happiness.
If we have this right as citizens of the USA then why are there vice laws?
Why are there laws against jumping off bridges or embankments, or any number of other 5150’s.
Why are there anti drug or prostitution laws.
As long as I am of age and not harming anyone else why are there laws to stop me from doing anything.
If the idea is to protect the city, state, etcetera from liability then just make it so they can not be sued because you did something that harmed yourself.
For those who say citizens will pick up the tab then criminalize driving the car it kills or disables thousands each & every year

The cynic in me says it's all about the money, while, well, the cynic in me also says that it's about the squeaky wheel getting the grease. Like the person above, it has something to do with taxes, but part of it is also about shutting people up who complain about perceived "evils", and these have been and are enacted by people from all across the political spectrum, not just conservatives, though the types of freedoms abridged differ between conservatives and liberals. That was a large part of the impetus behind Prohibition and its later descendants. For what it's worth, I think it sucks, and just as importantly, it sucks resources and money from areas that could better use the money.

Be strong young man and stay away from the temptations of the big city that will only eat you up and spit you out a broken pile of human fodder. Join a 4-H club, raise a goat, and learn to square dance. Find a girl, settle down, if you want you can marry, look at me I am old but I'm happy. I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy to be calm once you've found something going on. But take your time think a lot, think of all the things you've got, because you'll still be here tomorrow but your dreams may not.

Well...."such a deep thought for such a shallow mind..." ...Most bridges have no "sidewalk" and should not have any pedestrians ( most car drivers will avoid hitting a pedestrian by turning sharply into other lanes-or oncoming traffic- and that causes death for the drivers most times) Thus the need for MORE cops to patrol these areas for such idiots. Drug dealers Kill innocent people who get in their way....But I do agree that YOU have the right to end your own life "if that is your wish " and there should be a place for those who wish to "end it ". Just as long as it don't stop traffic !!!

Basically ''tax'', or the non-collection of it. With other things like jumping off bridges, committing suicide, then the non-collection of due payments. It's all about the Benjamins, baby.
