Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was officially replaced by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), a high-precision atomic time standard, on January 1, 1972.

A great many people including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) still use the term GMT for Coordinated Universal Time.

PS - The acronym UTC is a most peculiar international compromise between the English acronym CUT for Coordinated Universal Time and the French acronym TUC for le temps universel coordonné.
