I know it is the title of a book and movie by Stephen King but what physical or intangible thing is a green mile? I assume it is one mile long, and may have something to do with grass perhaps, and something to do with that prison in the book/movie, but what exactly is a green mile?

Maybe it's a mile of grass to the exit. But did Stephen King invent the term or has that term been around awhile?

The Green Mile is named as it is because the cells that the inmates awaiting death were housed in were lining a hall of green flooring. They had to walk it when they were headed to the electric chair.

It's definitely not an actual mile, but walking to your death penalty was called "Walking the mile", and there's happened to be green in the story. It's only specific to this story- there's no real thing called a green mile.

"Corridors leading to execution rooms [in prisons] are called the "last mile". The linoleum flooring of the corridor of the prison in the book (and movie) is green, hence "Green Mile". It was made up for the book and then used for the movie.

P.S. The actual distance to the execution chamber is rather short in real prisons, but to the prisoner, it can feel like a mile. The term "last mile" most likely came from a movie of the same name released in 1932

Both in the book and the movie, Stephen King used that word "Green Mile" to refer to the death row. I guess it was mainly due to the fact that its a mile long walk to the execution chamber and the floor was color green (at least that's what it looks like in the movie)...

His domain was called "The Green Mile" because 1) the linoleum floor was green and 2) condemned prisoners walking to their execution are said to be walking "the last mile".

The above came from Wikipedia. I think the term just came from Steven King's brilliant mind.
