I have a 1990 Volkswagon Jetta GL. It has major vibration at idle that drastically reduces upon scceleration. I also have noticed some blue white colored smoke a couple times coming out of the tail pipe. Hope it is not what I fear: a leaking head gasket? I clearly can not perform the compression check for it, is there any other way of testing for this problem?

OK first the smoke , does it smell "sweet" (coolant, ,head gasket probably) or oily ? also watch your fluids , if oil is in your water or vice versa probably head gasket or cracked head/block. next , loosen your plug wires and start the car, get some well insulated gloves and insulated pliers and one by one pull and replace plug wires, the one that changes the idle the least is your "dead" cylinder and is feeding the oil to be burnt, no difference? give it a tune up and the heavily gunged up plug is the one you switch to a hotter one to burn the oil that is getting in there, good luck , be safe.oh yeah, if it is burning oil only at idle it is the valve guides and seals that need work, hopefully a tune up with hotter plugs will get you through until you get it fixed

Sounds more like a valve problem to me. buy a repair manual on your car and read the section for testing and adjusting the valves. good luck
