Gandhi was called Mahatma by several people. -

1) Rabindranath Tagore-
In 1914 Gandhi returned to India. Through Andrews he met Rabindranath Tagore the following year, who called Gandhi a mahatma, "great soul," as the Theosophists had in South Africa. He was to become for millions of Indians simply the Mahatma. In 1919 he announced a Satyagraha struggle, resulting in the Amritsar massacre. By 1920 he was the dominant political figure, and the major campaigns of 1920-22, 1930-34, and 1940-42 led to British abdication. From the 1930's he was based at Sevagram, a village in central India, where he worked on a "constructive programme" to educate rural India, develop cottage industries, and fight untouchability.

2)The Indian people called Gandhi Mahatma, meaning Great Soul. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was better known as Mahatma Gandhi. "Mahatma" means "Great-Souled One." His followers and admirers adorned him with this significant title, but the Mahatma's soulful humility vehemently disclaimed the title. To be absolutely correct, Mahatma Gandhi had two more names: Ahimsa, Non-Violence, and Satyagraha, Soul-Force.

3) In another context I read that Netaji Subash bose Called him first as Mahatma-

Well, Rabindranath Tagore did it.

And as for the film goes:
Mahatma means a great soul, 'maha' + 'atma' = 'mahatma' but I would not call him that. It is true his view of peace is truly revolutionary but man's first instinct is survival and not in sacrifice. It is only when he has assured his survival that he embarks on other noble deeds such as sacrifice. Let me tell you this that Gandhiji never fought any war and all he did was with peace (was he scared?). He should have supported Subhash during the second world war, when the british used Indian soldiers for their own utility. If then they had protested then itself freedom could have come faster; yes Gandhiji's NO resulted in the split of Congress and Netaji was deemed to be a 'TERRORIST'. He became saint but Netaji, the President of the then Congress, who named him 'BAPU' died. It was beacuse of his efforts that the English realised their stay was over. You see Bapu tried for so long (20 yrs+) but nothing happend, After the Indian Army led by Netaji attacked the British, they left the next year. Call that co-incidence!

Gandhiji once came to India from south Africa and was going back in a ship. There were many Indian labourers in that ship going to work in south Africa. When the ship reached Cape town port a rumour went around the English community that Gandhi has brought a lot of blacks to support his movement against the government. Gandhiji was detained in the ship itself for some time but ultimately he had to be allowed to land. When he was going some whites recognised him and wanted to beat him up. Luckily one Mrs Alexander who's husband was a police officer protected him and left him at his friends house. There also the mob surrounded the house and demanded Gandhi be handed over to them. Gandhiji escaped from the house by backdoor dressed as labourer. Later friends advised him to sue the whites who assaulted him. Gandhi said"i do not have any grudge or dispute with them I am against the government which is against the Indians and i will continue my work to rectify their out look"
When this statement of Gandhiji was released in Indian News papers Dr Annibesant said "He is Mahatma" and the name stuck to him.
