I Swear I hate people who don't know what they are telling someone about Elecrtical work!!.............IF you have 2 switches one that controls the fan and one for the light it's simple, BUT if you have One switch that controls both fan/light you CAN NOT use a dimmer, you will either burn up the fan motor or the dimmer, IF you have 2 switches take the one out that controls the light(you will need to make sure if it's single pole or a 3way switch) and follow the directions that come with your new Dimmer, But if you have one switch that controls both you can't dim the light unless you rewire the fan/light with the proper wire and switches. Hope this helps

If you want to control the fan with a dimmer, it should be a heavy duty switch, because a lot of energy will be passing through it. If you want to control the lighting only, it has to be wired to the wall switch in the first place. Remove the existing switch, and follow directions on the dimmer package.

Forget fishing wires. At a ceiling fan store, purchase an in-wall remote switch and receiver. Hand helds also available. The receiver installs in the fan canopy, the switch installs in place of the existing switch which controls the ceiling junction box. Cost approx $40, easy to install. You are not going to like to here this...but it is time to fish wires!!! 14-3 should do it....it will have 4 wires in its casing...1 red 1 black 1 white and 1 bare copper. Copper wire to be grounded to boxes. White to white in switch box and fan box. Now red or black..you choose to dimmer switch to control light..other to control fan. In this case you will need an extra switch to control fan. Sorry about the bad news...

If the fixture has 2 switches, simply install a slider/dimmer. They cost upward from $25, some are labled fan and light.

I would strongly consider calling an Electrician. If you don't know what you are doing you could easily get shocked or even create a fire hazard.
