For example, if a girl has an 8 1/2 by 11 in paper, and she cuts out a 3 by 3 square, what is the total perimeter now?

It depends on where the 3x3 square was cut out.
If cut out of a corner, then the total perimeter remains the same, 39".
If cut out of a side, such that a side of the cut out square is on one of the sides of the paper, it increases by 6", or 45"
If cut out of a side, such that a corner of the 3x3 piece is on one of the sides of the paper, it increases by 12", or 51"

Also, I assume that she doesn't cut off a corner. But if she did, the perimeter could increase anywhere between 0" and (9-3√2)"

If she cut it from a corner, the same as before, 39"

If she cut it from a side and it didn't include a corner, she removed 3" from the previous perimeter and added 9" to it for a total of 45"

you subtract the total perimeter (8 1/2 x 11) minus the piece that was cut out.

the perimeter would be 33
(thats a corner)
i think you want the area though..for that find the areas of the paper, l x w x h in this case 8.5 x 11= 93.5 and then the 3 by 3 square wich is 9 and then subtract 93.5 - 9 = 84.5 is the area.

PERIMETER is the total of all side, all you need to do is add all the side up and you're done. if you want to try, cut a 3 by 3 square and add all the side up, if it is still 39 in, you got it

hi
the perimeter will not change, it will remain the same as before the girl cut the square. ( should be 187 using the firmula (2*length*breadth)
perimeter is the measure of the sum of the lengths of all the sides (or edges)

The perimeter would stay the same but your area would change from 93.5 to 84.5
