People used to ask me those questions all the time too and it was so annoying. No I'm not Mormon and no my dad ( who lives in Maryland) doesn't have a billion wives. He has one and no it's not my mom. And no, I'm not Catholic. I wanted to wear a sign so people would stop looking at me like a circus freak. People even ask in Utah are you Mormon, well then what are you. I'm human thanks! I think people do think that Mormon's are the only people there, it's just ignorance, don't let it get to you. But I sympathize.

I grew up in Utah and now live in New Zealand. I get the same thing here, although I am usually asked while I have a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. All you can really do is educate these people. Most of them don't mean it in a bad way, they just don't realize that there are non Mormons from Utah. Look at the news, movies, TV shows, etc. What do they all show the people who watch them? That there are only Mormons there. So next time you are asked, just let them know that they are wrong. If we all do this, maybe in 10,000 years, everyone will know! lol

I know some people in Utah and they're just like any people anywhere else. Utah is a beautiful and thriving state and its residents are made up of Mormons and non-Mormons. The state as a whole shouldn't be judged by the religion of those who founded it, just like people from Pennsylvania shouldn't all be thought of as Quakers. Anyway, the Mormons are some of the most honest and hardworking and helpful people on earth and they don't practice polygamy - offshoot groups CLAIMING to be Mormons have the extra wives. If a Mormon marries more than one spouse, he/she is excommunicated.

I have some very good friends from Utah. Very friendly and just like everyone else. They don't swear as much as the rest of us, but they're not all the sterotypicaly people who marry 8 people you think they are.

When I visited Utah and was driving from the airport into salt lake city I saw a sign:

"Welcome to Utah, Set your watch back 20 years".

The sign was right. Utah is culturally backwards.

I understand- I am from Nashville. People automatically think I live in the country, eat grits, and listen to country music (I don't). People just feel comfortable with labels.

You shouldn't have to fight sterotyping. It should make you wonder about the intelligence of people from other states. To answer your question I think they are just people from another state.
