It's not very painful for the baby unless it gets BADDD..

The baby will have small white patches different areas in the mouth.

Your nipples will become sore (more than latch-on-difficulty-soreness!!, and you and the baby can pass the thrush back and forth to each other - can seem an endless cycle if not treated QUICKLY!!!)..

Get treated as quickly as possible so that you don't stop breastfeeding altogether (as I did)..

They should give you two different medications.
One for your nipples (and may also be used on the baby's diaper area), and one for the baby's mouth. The one for your nipples (and baby's diaper area) contains much less sugar than the other - which is great, as thrush feeds on sugar.

Read what Dr. Sears has to say about thrush (just google Dr. Sears and thrush), or write to me for more info. if you don't feel like or aren't able to do some more research on your own.

Best of luck, I hope it's NOT thrush (or that it takes a hike REAL soon!!)

TMI alert.... when i was about 8 weeks pregant, i had thrush. i had a lime green discharge, not smelly, and was not itchy. my doctor didnt no what it was, so done a swab and sent it off and it was thrush. thrush is not a pregnancy symptom, but is very common in pregnancy, as the body temperature rises, making it easier for bacteria to live.

the baby will have white spots on the inside of its cheeks and/or on its tongue...if you are breastfeeding, you may have it on your nipples and that could cause your nipples to look very red and be very itchy...thrush is caused by the yeast called Candida...seek medical treatment as soon as you can and follow exactly what the doctor tells you to do. The most common cures are antibiotics and using a topical cream called Nystatin...It can be very bothersome for the baby so much that they may even refuse feedings Chances are, if your baby has thrush in her mouth, she may also be getting it in her diaper area as well, in the form of a red bumpy rash(not always though)

Oral thrush usually produces creamy white lesions on your tongue and inner cheeks and sometimes on the roof of your mouth, gums and tonsils. The lesions, which resemble cottage cheese, can be painful and may bleed slightly when rubbed or scraped. Although signs and symptoms often develop suddenly, they may persist for a long period of time.

Symptoms in infants and breast-feeding mothers
Healthy newborns with oral thrush usually develop symptoms during the first few weeks of life. In addition to the distinctive white mouth lesions, infants may have trouble feeding or be fussy and irritable. They can also pass the infection to their mothers during breast-feeding. Women whose breasts are infected with Candida may experience the following signs and symptoms:

Unusually red or sensitive nipples
Taut, shiny skin on the areola
Unusual pain during nursing or painful nipples between feedings
Stabbing pains deep within the breast

I agree with the previous answer but I just wanted to add...if you are breastfeeding you need to be treated as well. Otherwise you may just pass it back and forth. They will give you a cream to apply to your nipple that is safe for the babe to ingest. Good luck!
