look montana is the best, the only reason he doesn't have the most 4th quarter comebacks is because the 9ers were always smokin everybody

who are you comparing these guys to?..Manning will go down in history as one the greats..Brady and McNabb (maybe) will likely join him in the hall of fame..outside them there isn't much..but little Manning and Palmer could be in the same breathe as them in a handful of years

these guys are still with their original teams..unless you count the draft of Eli as a charger..but remember Elway wasn't drafted by Denver

Your memory is very selective. It's like you are saying all these guys were in their prime at the same time. I grew up in your era and even previously so here we go:
some of Montana's Super Bore years
'81--11 passers had 20 or more TDs. Your vaunted Montana had only 19 that season.
'84--only 8 passers topped 20 TDs. Moon was 12 TDs and 14 INTs, Elway 18-15, Fouts 19-17.
'88--only 9 hit the big 20. Montana 18-10, O'brien 15-7, Moon 17-8, Elway 17-19...

Anyway, I could go on but face facts. You are comparing the primes of all these guys vs. where QBs are at now in 2006. All the guys you mentioned did not perform as all-pros in a single year together.

And how can you mention Everett and O'Brien as even considered as "greats." I mean, had a few good seasons but get real. Simms? you're joking, aren't you? The reason the G-men won was their D. Simms had one good conservative passing Uber Bore and he's on TV. He was not a "great" QB at all.
Cunningham? The perennial underachiever. Great to watch but ...where are the playoff wins?

Anyhoo, give the guys around now a break and when their careers are done I bet Brady, Peyton, Palmer, Rivers, Brees, Roethlisberger and others will match up well.

At the end of this generation, the top 5 QBs of all time will be (in no particular order)

Dan Marino
Brett Favre
John Elway
Peyton Manning
and Tom Brady

Marino because he is Marino. Brett Favre because he is the Cal Ripken of QBs, not to mention hes giving Marino a run for his money with the records. Elway because for most the records Marino doesnt hold, Elway does, and for the ones Marino does hold, Elway is second. Manning because he will shatter all of the passing records. And Brady because by the time he is done he'll have 4 or 5 rings, which is just unbelievable.

As for the rest of today's QBs? McNabb will be considered an all time-great. I think Phillip Rivers and Eli will have good careers, but its still too early to tell. Vick will be washed up in 4 years. Carson Palmer will have a decent career. After that I dont see anyone making too much noise with comparisson to the greats.

Of this years draft class, Jay Cutler will have the best career only because of the team around him. Arizona will never give Leinart the protection and Young will turn into Steve Mcnair, that is good but constantly getting injured due to his style of play.

No, you'll see Peyton Manning will go in the books as the best ever, todays NFL is jacked up everyone is bigger, stronger and meaner. Guys that are hitting these QB's are head hunting with a passion. Look at Carson Palmer he is going to be in the books as one of the best, Manning is going to be the best. And the NFL has so many up and comers like Leinert, Young and Marcus Vick(who is going to be 10 times better than his bro) Todays game is more physically and mentally demanding.

Sorry old man your days are done let the new guys have their days of glory.

Even those guys will tell you that the game today is much different than the game they used to play.

Manning is a great qb - I've heard some of the guys you listed say as much. He will be considered on of the greats when he retires. So I don't think that stating because they play now they aren't good is accurate.

As for "youngins" - I was born before Brett Favre - so how old are you????

What' your question.... what's your motive for this outlandish blog you posted... Oh I get it... your favorite team must be loosing right now because of a young QB that everybody keeps comparing to some NFL great... I understand... All the QB's that came before Manning, Brady, McNabb, Palmer and Farve ARE better... OK... You happy now ???

Montana and Elway were ok....but they were nothing compared to Otto Graham or Johnny Unitas.
Geez.

I have to agree with you. I think free agency has a lot to do with this because young quarterbacks coming into the league have one good season, and they're off to another team making more money.

Don't forget Johnny Unitas(the best ever) and Joe Namath.

p manning will ONLY be considered one of the greats ONLY IF he can scrape out at least one Super Bowl win... right now he doesn't even have one Super Bowl APPEARANCE!!
