Well im asuming you live in the US. They have to have probable cause now that can be tricky because whats probable cause to one officer may not be to another. For instance the smell of a drug can be probable cause but a good attorney can usually get that thrown out.. Also if they think you are under the influence, that usually gets thrown out unless they get some sort of blood test or something for drugs. Most of the states laws say that if they see something that is in plain view, meaning a gun handle sticking out somewhere or they can see a pipe or something on your floorboard. You can refuse the right to be searched. An officer can however do what they call a "saftey search" which is just a quick pat down to make sure you have no weapons, but if they find something not related to the saftey search it is not admissable evidence. Rember this, if they ask to search you more than likely they have no probable cause,(cause thats why they are asking, they need your consent) Stick by your guns if they ask to search tell them no, but be polite to them. Tell them its your personal property and you dont want a stranger digging around in it. Remeber anything you say can and will be used against you. The best advice keep your mouth shut and dont consent to anything.

you show them your registration and license. if you appear to know your rights they more than likely wont **** with you. remember the only way they can search the car is with a warrant or with your consent. probable cause is a very hard thing for a cop to win unless a. there is a drug dog who alerts him. or b. there is some contraband or open beer bottles or anything like that in plain veiw. most of all dont consent. DO NOT CONSENT TO A SEARCH. if you do youve given up your rights and more than likely the officer will be far to busy to actually go through and get the warrant and he will let you go. he cant impound your car legally unless he arrests you. which remember he cant arrest you for no reason. he can detain you for maybe 15 to 30 minutes. thats it. so just keep your mouth shut and make it hard for him. remember they have to prove that your guilty. dont do there job for them.

Probable cause, pursuant to arrest, or your consent. Probable cause also includes anything that gives them reasonable belief of danger that requires searching. ie if they have good reason to believe that there is a gun in the car and they feel they need to search for their own safety.

Probable cause. It is quite easy to see a probable cause, which could be a cross or stupid word from the driver or passenger(s).
Certainly smelling pot or boose will give the police a cause to search.

If you don't allow them to search they will impound your car until they get a search warrant, it happens.
