Short answer: because it's against the rules.

Long answer: metal bats allow a batter to hit the ball much further and harder than do wooden bats. This is not a big deal at lower levesl (high school, little league, college) because most players' skills aren't as developed at that age. However, at the professional level, the use of metal bats would significantly distort the game - most outfield flies would become home runs, and even infield hits would become harder to field. Professional baseball is at a point where there's a fairly even balance between offense and defense/pitching, and the use of metal bats would massively skew the game in favor of the batters.

I you want to know why hitters don't take metal bats to the plate when they need a homer, it's because the rules in professional baseball require wooden bats.

However, if you want to know why they're illegal, there are several reasons. The ball is hit faster off a metal bat so...
... infielders are more likely to get hurt by getting hit by the ball.
... it would be too hard for infielders to get the ball before it gets to the outfield.
... fans would be at a higher risk for injuries.
... home runs would be way too common.

Picture this--bases loaded, one out, top of the ninth, tie game. You're the third baseman, the infield has to come in, and here comes Albert Puljos striding to the plate with his favorite aluminum bat. If he lines one at you, you're life span becomes even shorter than that of a typical Italian Government. Ya see?

well first off there are rules that allow only wood bats to be used in professional leagues....second off with how powerful major leaguers are, people would die, literall, aluminum bats provide more power with each swing and contact, also pro's are still hitting homers left and right using wood
