Snoring CAN be related to weight gain, but many slender people snore as well. There may be a genetic component.
Snoring can be a symptom of a very serious disorder called sleep apnea, which can, if untreated, lead to heart damage and even death.
If you snore softly once in a while, then this is probably not apnea, but if you shake the house, snore like a bear, and drive your spouse to the guest bedroom, then apnea is a distinct probability. Sounds like your husband is in the second group, so he needs medical help, not poking, smothering, or kicking!
Apnea is usually treated with the use of a device called a CPAP. He can't just buy one of these - they are sold only on prescription, as the pressure needs to be adjusted to his individual needs, with too high pressure being as dangerous as too low. CPAP stops snoring 100% and usually makes the patient feel generally more energetic and alert during the day as well.
Please get him to ask his doctor to refer him to a sleep clinic right away. They usually have a long waiting list, and it's important to get the process started ASAP.
Good luck - and sweet dreams!

Three things helped my husband with his snoring: I think the biggest help was his losing weight. As soon as he lost about 10 pounds most of his snoring disappeared, he wasn't even that huge, but about 190 pounds or so & once he got down to about 180 pounds the snoring really almost disappeared, plus it's probably healthier for him too.
He still snores for some reason when he sleeps sometimes on his back about once a month. So on the nights he does that, we actually discussed this ahead of time (during the daytime when we were awake) and came up with a code word, which was "stomach", (because before the "discussion" he was upset when I would try to get him to roll over and we would start fighting), and he then rolls over from his back onto his stomach, and then the snoring stops.
Also, the 3rd thing I've definitely noticed is that when he's exhausted and not getting much sleep he starts snoring again, so I think it's key that dh tries to get enough sleep also.

Let me just say, join the club, aren't they a pest or what?? I have the same problem but what I do most of the time is just sleep in our sofa that we have in our bedroom. It does make him feel bad because I always end up sleeping out. But one thing that you must know, when men snores, they are very tired. Yes every time he start snoring make sure that you turn him on his side and it will stop the snoring, second before he sleep make him put a strip on top of his nose. Or buy a nose spray that can him breath easily when he sleep. But the remedy that I have is I bought him this pillow from JC penny that help him breath at night.hope this help...

Umm... try the breath right strips...it might help..it might not. Chances are hes probably congested and needs something to clear his head out...Try the strips and if that doesnt work see if you can get an appointment with an ENT(ear nose and throat) dr to see if he has problems with a deviated septum or if there is anything that can help him more other than the strips. There are many reasons a person snores...try the strips.....GOOD LUCk!!

Sorry
my dad snores really bad
try thoes noes strips things, they tend to help
also if he is overweight, that may be the cause.
if not, some people just have a nose that is (for a lack of a beter word) blocked while they sleep.
hoep you find a way to make it work
maybe you can sleep with ear plugs...

Hey coming from a medical standpoint your husband may suffer from what is called sleep apnea. Its when there is an airway disturbance when u sleep. Is he overweight? Tired throughout the day? fatigue? these are important questions to consider. If yes to these I would advise seeing a doctor for a full evaluation... Hope I could help.
