that the primary function of colleges should be to prepare students for the world of work?

Absolutely.

But subversive factions have learned that students at college are experiencing more freedom then at any time in their life and prey upon them while their minds are still impressionable. A friend of mine was furious one day at work after a holiday. He said his son came home and while they were talking he started spouting very indignant pro communist propaganda. My friend later took a week of vacation and drove to the college and confronted the dean in person. The dean supported the teacher it came from and my friend packed his son in the car and the boy never went back to that school.

THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!!!

It depends on the college. I'd be really angry if the civil engineering department didn't prepare its students, and a bridge I was driving on fell down because of it.

Most liberal arts disciplines, though, should prepare a student for thinking through problems -- it just so happens this is extremely beneficial for an employer, but it's also very beneficial for the student, who can apply thinking to his or her personal life as well as work life.

Some disciplines seem to prepare a student for more academia -- which is OK, too.

But if college prepares a student only for the world of work, it is doing a great disservice. The world of work is constantly changing with new technologies and services. If a graduate can't think his or her way through the new stuff, s/he will fail in the long run. And too many failures is not good for the world of work, nor the world at large.

Actually I disagree, particularly with the word "primary" in the statement. I think the primary goal should be to create well-educated people who can carry on the traditions of our culture. There's a lot to the world beyond just work; college needs to prepare people for life.

No, it should teach them arcane languages and unmarketable skills so that the money the parents spent on them is wasted and their kid can come home and live in their basement.
