I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure this question out and i just cannot!!!!
This makes me want to HATE PHYSICS!!!


here is the question:
1)
A bag of Produce weights 5.83lb on Earth. What should it weight on the moon, where the free-fall acceleration is (1/6) that on Earth? answer in units of N.

if anyone can please help me or show me how to figure it out...I would greatly appreciate it!!!

It would weigh 1/6 of what it weighs on earth.

Generally a lb is considered a force with the slug as the mass unit. However, this has become muddled through use.

Thus the proper way to to do this is converting lbs to kg which is really converting a force to mass which technically is wrong. However, due to our strange standards, we must do so.

Thus

5.83 lbs = 2.644 kg ( 1 lb = .454kg)

Then we relate this to the weight of the bag in metric units.

Thus, 2.644 * 9.81 = 25.938 N on Earth. (9.81 is the acceleration of gravity on the earth)

The gravitational acceleration on the moon is 1/6 of this, so we just divide 25.938 N by 6

4.323 Newtons is your answer.

On the moon, any object weighs (1/6) of its weigh on the Earth. It should be clear that a bag weighing 5.83 on Earth will weigh 0.9717 lb on the moon.

You only have to convert this result to N (Newtons). I don't have the proper conversion factor at hand, but I know that 1 lb is 0.4536 kg, and 1 kg equals 9.81 N. Operating, this yields 4.324 N.

The main thing we need for this is that 2.2 llbs = 1kg. So in this case you want to convert the pounds to Kg.

5.83 /2.2 = 2.65kg.

The next thing thats given is 1/6 of the earths gravity so you take

9.81m/s^2 * (1/6)= 1.635m/s^2

Now you take the mass and multiply the acceleration to get the weight of the items in newtons, so in this case

1.635m/s^2 * 2.65kg = 4.33275kgm/s^2 = 4.33 N

free-fall acceleration on Earth = 9.81
free-fall acceleration on moon = 9.81 / 6 = 1.635

weight = mg (mass X gravitational force / free-fall acceleration)
mass should be in kilograms
therefore covert 5.83 lb to kilograms = 2.6444 grams

weight = 2644.4 grams X 1.635 = 4.323594 N

If acceleration is 1/2*mass*velocity^2 then you know that the mass is 1/6 of that on the earth... so convert 5.83 lbs to mass and then find 1/6 of that.

I think you have to convert from pounds to grams to kilograms. that's your first step.

second step, take (1/6) multiplied by 9.81 m/s^2 --> this gives you 1/6 of the earth's free fall acceleration.

third step, you take step one multiplied by step two.

i wish i could help you further, but i don't know the conversion of pounds to grams!
