Disneyland is located in Anaheim, California (not far from Downtown LA) and opened July 18, 1955 to the public (July 17 to invited guests only). It is the second most visited theme park in the world, and visited by all kinds of people including "celebrities". Opening day was not a pleasant one as plumbers went on strike, cement was still wet, it was 110* Fahrenheit, half the lands had to close due to a gas leak, etc... Disneyland's icon is Sleeping Beauty's Castle and their official nickname is "The happiest place on earth".
Walt Disney World (WDW) is located in Lake Buena Vista, Florida (right outside Orlando) and opened its first theme park Magic Kingdom October 1, 1971. Magic Kingdom at WDW is the most visited theme park in the world. Walt used several different alias names to buy out land in Central FL for a cheaper price and also to keep the media out. WDW is home to four theme parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, MGM Studios, and Animal Kingdom), two water parks (Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach), over twenty Disney Resorts, shopping, golf courses, etc… WDW has several “icons” but everyone knows it for Cinderella’s Castle and their official nickname is "The most magical place on earth". Magic Kingdom has a whole “city” underneath the streets for cast members only so they can walk to their post without taking away from the feel of the rest of the park.
Walt’s famous quote from opening day at Disneyland, "To all who come to this happy place – welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, dreams and the hard facts that have created America… with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world."
Walter E. Disney, July 17, 1955
Roy’s (Walt’s brother) famous quote from opening day Magic Kingdom, “Walt Disney World is tribute to the philosophy and life of Walter Elias Disney... and to the talents, the dedication, and the loyalty of the entire Disney organization that made Walt Disney's dream come true. May Walt Disney World bring Joy and Inspiration and New Knowledge to all who come to this happy place... a Magic Kingdom where the young at heart of all ages can laugh and play and learn -- together.”
Roy O. Disney, October 1, 1971

The first ever built was Disneyland in 1955. Walt Disney wanted to build a place where parents AND kids could enjoy themselves. He bought an orange grove in Anaheim and built the theme park there. I am not sure how long it took to built but some feared it might not be completely ready by the scheduled opening date.
In fact the pavement was so new that on that hot July 17th day that it opened women's heels were sinking into it.
Walt Disney world was opened in 1971. The construction began in 1967, one year after Walt Disney died and the reason it is so famous is because it is part of the Disney theme park family . The fact that it is bigger than Disneyland is only because the space in Florida is much larger than the land they had to build on in California.
I have never been to Disneyworld but I live so close to Disneyland that I am there every week.
Here are some facts that I konw of both parks.
Disneyworld has a few different parks. There is the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney MGM studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. It also has two water parks. Typhoon lagoon and Blizzard Beach.
Both parks have a Downtown Disney district and I am sure they both have a World of Disney store. It is like any other disney store though four times the size of a normal one.
One last tidbit of information. WDW is roughly 30,000 acres or about the size of San Francisco.

Disneyland was opened in 1955 in California. Walt Disney became upset because other business were capitalizing on his name & locaation, building hotels & other attractions nearby.
In the 60's he began buying up large parcels of land in Florida under different names so that no one would know that he was planning another theme park.
Disney World was opened in 1971. Unfortunately, Walt didn't live to see it's completion. He passed away in '68 (I think) of lung cancer. (again, I think).
I am sure you could look all this up yourself. There are plenty of sites out there with all sorts of Disney info.
Good luck with your assignment.

Disneyland is the original in California. Disney World was an enhanced copy/paste in the east coast, because not everybody can make it to California. Disneyland just celebrated the 50th anniversary last year.
