As the flu season approaches I start taking more vitamin C. It comes in little pills of 500mg each, and I used to take 2 a day. But recently I felt my self getting sick because my father and best friend were sick, so I started taking 4 a day. Am I doing more harm than good? thnx

Kiki, this is probably the most thorough source for Vitamin C info, it's easy to read and understand.

As far as harm goes, you would have to take quite a bit before that would happen. Zinc and beta-glucan are a couple other supplements myself and the family takes this time of year to keep our immune system boosted.

I hope this helped

2000mg is generally the cutoff. While Vit C helps with interfuron production (your body's natural defense against viruses) and connective tissue repair. Too much Vit C can actually have the opposite effects. Another factor you have to worry about is rebound scurvy. This occurs from taking too much synthetic vitamin C and dropping your intake (eg if you were to take 3 or 4k mg of vitamin C every day for a week and then stop). Most vitamins have toxicity levels and adverse affects when taken in too great of a quantity.

Everyone's need for vitamin C is different. It's even different for the individual depending on their current state of health. You may only need 1,000 mg today and tomorrow, you may need 2,000 mg.

Therefore, the best signal as to how much you personally need may sound a little weird, but when you reach the point of diarrhea...back off a bit on the Vitamin C. That is your body's signal you are taking in more than it needs. Mind you, the diarrhea is not a sign you are hurting yourself and it does not mean STOP taking the Vitamin C...just back off a bit.

No, because your body takes what it needs and expels the rest....you can't take too much vitamin C and it holds true with most Vitamins. One thing that saved my life from getting sick any more is an air purifier. Friedrich C90A is awesome. About 5oo.oo but well worth it....Haven't been sick since I purchased one four years ago. Also, purifiers like the Ionic Breeze are bologne....If you can't afford the Friedrich do some research, there are still good ones. good luck.

something over 2 hundred mg is more effective than sufficient to maximise the ranges of plasma and lymphocytes. there are cases even as a body does require further quantities of diet C. as an example, if you're lower than any variety of environmental rigidity which incorporates a trauma, fever, or any type of an infection. something over 500 mg, inspite of any of the above pronounced environmental factors, will attain anybody's optimal saturation price. diet C is a water - soluble protein and in well-known circumstances, something in extra is excreted by the body. even as it isn't excreted that is going to reason diarrhea, gas, and abdomen cramps now at the very least. different consequences may be severe cramps, nausea, and hazards for kidney stones.

MORE GOOD THAN HARM!!!
VITAMIN C HAS A VERY HIGH TOXIC LEVEL AND 4-6 GRAMS A DAY TAKEN IN THE COURSE OF THE DAY WOULD BE A GOOD DOSE IF SOMEONE IN YOUR PRESENTS HAS A COLD. C PASSES THROUGH THE BODY QUICKLY SO IT'S BETTER TO SPACE IT OUT DURING THE DAY.
IF YOU ARE IN THE NORTHERN PART OF THE USA AT THIS TIME OF YEAR DON'T FORGET VITAMIN D, MANY ARE DEFICIENT.

Vitamin C is a water soluable vitamin. Watever your body does not use , you will excrete in your urine. You should probably divide the doses into 4 times daily in order to get the greatest benefit from the vitamin C.

Linus Pauling the pariah of vitamin C took some 3,000 mg daily
if my memory serves well and it's water soluble so the excess will be washed out with ones urine . don't forget one of the best things you can do for yourself is hydration meaning drink eight or more glasses of water a day I go at it to the tune of a gallon or more aside from other fluids .
peace out enjoy the life !

No such thing and actually some recommend taking very high doses (10000 to 20000 mg a day) as a cure all for all types of illnesses, I currently take about 3000 mg a day as a maintenance dose.
