But I would really like to know why 'Anglo-Americans', (as I heard some of y'll want to be called- see no trying to be offensive;) feel like it is sooo important to up hold apperances. Like their marraige is falling apart, debt is unbearably high, and the kids are in rehab again, but they still smile, and carry on like everything is OK.
Generally from my friends (and mostly their parents) the house looks like no one lives there, the cars are perfectly up kept, the lawn looks like it was cut w/ scissors.
Its like the twilight zone. Its creepy almost. I want to slap them and tell them to be real, this is not leave it to beaver.
Where does this come from, it has to be exhausting?

There's a certain amount of that in white Australian culture as well, though perhaps not so much. I think it's more common among those with more money and comes from the British higher classes - i.e. dukes and whatnot felt the need to maintain their status as 'higher' than the other classes they had power over. I laugh to see it in today's society, because most of us are not leaders and have no need to feed our status by showing the world how together we are. Added to that, Western culture has moved on, and trying to prove we're not human doesn't gain us credibility anymore. As a white Aussie, I've been exposed to the attitude you speak of within my family and I don't subscribe to it as a way of life. It's self-destructive and stupid... though I don't recommend telling everyone your deep dark secrets and crying about it all the time, either!

It is very exhausting. It comes not just from anglo-americans, but every middle-class American society. You are probably anglo so you cant relate to other ethnic groups. No harm meant. Okay, I will answer your question. It actually starts at home and then it is re-enforced during your college years. During your LINE days at either a frat or soro. Its silly I know, but the thought is, if everything around you is crumbling you still cannot allow your adversaries see you sweat. Only then have you admitted defeat. The only difference between a winner and a loser is, a winner never quits. You never know when the tide is going to change, so you stay prepared. Even if the only way you can so preparedness, "keeping up appearances." Don't dislike your parents or others for doing this, realize their struggle and be the best child a parent could have. They are only attempting to be the best parent you could have. The reason it looks as though no one lives there is only because with order, you cannot pin point disorder. And also, its cheaper to keep a clean home. No pest infestations. Its all quite simple really. Again, do not feel trapped or someone is misleading you. Everyone that you know that you have mentioned here is doing their best to show you what a good home and a healthy, safe, and loving enviroment should look like. Besides, would you actually prefer that you live in squalor and neglect? That would be depressing. Again, I am not anglo. I am educated. That said, it only means that I did my very best to be where I am, and it shows in everything that I do.

once you're British with Filipino roots and get said as a f***ing paki or chinky you may not help yet experience its meant to be offensive. that is not the interest itself, its the context its in a good number of cases used in. And its also the shown truth that its used as a noun to sum up the completed human being, not searching previous the nationality even as Brit or Aussie is mostly used as an remark of the position that human being is from and by no potential the purely ingredient it really is said about them. I apologise for that very last aspect not being too coherent yet i desire you realize what I mean. really, the words Brit and Aussie are literally not used interior an similar way it really is why they don't look offensive. even as i imagine PCness has lengthy gone loopy, you should make sure it from the different area too.

Hmmm. I am a white guy who drives an old car, not too neat in the yard and the house could do with some repairs. I don't have the latest clothes, etc. In reference to your question....does that mean I am not an anglo ? Most people are nice.

This is not a race issue, it's about self-respect. As far as the home/lawn statement, that's all a matter of respecting your property, and for some, laziness (those who don't keep up their house and lawn are just plain lazy).

Baby, it doesn't happen with only Anlo-Americans. Open your eyes (and your mind) and have a look around. And instead of looking for differences in people, try to find some (positive) similarities. Have a nice day.

Yet another sweeping generalization.
Why is it whenever people want to rip on a certain race they always preface their Q with: "This is not meant to be racially offensive!?"
