To be able to compare the results of your experiment to something. For example if you are testing a drug, you need 3 groups: one that takes the drug, one that take a placebo and one that doesn't take anything. In this way, you can compare the results from the first 2 groups to the 3rd one and see if your drug is working or not!

You need to be able to compare your data to something, first off. It's also a good self-check measure. As an example, say you're doing an experiment with bacteria in petri dishes. If the control dish of bacteria isn't doing what it should, you might have a problem with the bacteria in general, so your results won't be as accurate as they should be.

you need something to compare your data to other wise it is completely irrelivent

you need to know what happens under normal conditions without any other variables to determine what the affects of the experimental variable had on your test
