the good thing about football is its all about opinions
but facts speak louder than words
having read some of the total trash some have written on here about certain players i feel i have to point out a few things
1 what have man utd won since david beckham left?
2 how many goals have england scored against teams in the top 50 in the world in the last 5 years when beckham wasnt on the pitch?
i am not saying beckham is the best player ever but he has earned the right to be up there with the best, and say what you like about him he always gave 100% unlike many others that play for england
and how can anyone say rooney is finished ? or overated?
he has done things with a ball no one else can do, so he is having a temporary loss of confidence, which he will get back and then he will be great again for all the world to see
when talking about overated players i look at 2 players that are not good enough to play in the conferance let alone the premiership
1 micheal carrick any one can pass a ball 10 yeards but that is all he can do and quite often to the other team. that was a waste of £18m
2 geoff horsfield how did he ever become a pro footballer?
he cant even trap a ball, a complete mystery to me how he made a living from kicking a ball
and i still am not totally sure about ronaldinho sure he can do tricks but he had a crap world cup and doesnt seem to perform well against decent opposition in spain or europe i think he is overated

When I answer a question, I usually look at what the people have answered, so I don't repeat what someone else has said. And that made me read that someone said Beckham is over rated. I just have to say that Beckham is not rated anymore, to be over rated. He is only making that money because it is in his contract from years ago. If he didn't have a contract, he wouldn't be making anything right now. So he is absolutely not over rated, because no one will let him play.
Now I do agree with the Rooney comment. because That kid can not play ball anymore. he had like 10 chances this past week, and didn't do anything with the ball. I don't think he could have hit the net if he was standing inside the goal posts. And he hasn't scored for the English National team for over 2 years!
So I think he is over rated. And speaking of Man U. I think they underrated Ruud van Nistelrooy, when they sold him, just look at what he is doing in Real Madrid. Same team where Beckham is sitting on the bench!

The worst/most over rated footballer has to have played for Southampton. Sadly I cant remember his name but basically Southampton paid 1.5 million for a player who claimed to be George weahs (a very talented African footballer for ac Milan) brother, the signed him and without even giving him a training session played him in a premiership match as a sub in the second half. He was on the pitch for about 15 minutes before being brought off as he couldn't play football at all. Turns out he wasn't a professional footballer ever, had never even played amateur football and wasnt related to George Weah either

O.K. this is interesting and a really good question after a long time... there are obviously going to be a variety of choices and they will vary according to support and favouritism- you cannot rule that out. Still to be honest we should fix a common parameter to judge that. maybe
1. How much he costs 2. What he has given in return 3. How much coverage the media has given. 4. Arrogance and self criticism.
A. David Becham
(High cost - high media coverae - Rating - nothing for Real madrid he does not even considered as a sub by Capello...... havent won the world cup....but have done the next best thing...won the Uefa Champions League cup with Manu. reserved and no big mouth and do not blame others for bad performances during post match interviews.
2.Wayne Rooney (High cost - high media coverage - no world cup - no Champions league - no league with Everton or Manu but very young and a lot to go with. not reserved but no big mouth and do not blame others for bad performances during post match interviews.
3.Thery Henry / High cost - / high media coverage - / rating - won the league with Arsenal - won the world cup and runners up once(though do not have much contribution in either venture and does not play well for France) -/ no Champions league. / not reserved, big mouth and always blames some one for the teams bad performances including referees, own team members, home and other fans, own fans, even the opposite players during post match interviews.
So who should it be... I think we all know who ...shocking and heart breaking but you asked to be honest!

Without a shadow of a doubt, David Beckham was the most overrated player of his generation.
I thought so for years but the guys in charge of the game took years to realise it sadly.
Sure he scored from the odd free kick, so would most average players if they took all the freekicks! He missed penalties on a regular basis & he was largely responsible for England's exits from World Cups 1998 & 2002. He was incapable of winning the ball or tackling & was not a team leader.
THIS WAS NOT HIS FAULT HOWEVER, IT WAS BUSINESS, MEDIA & THE PUBLIC. HE DIDN'T CHOOSE HIMSELF.

I would have to say that Rio Ferdinand is the most overrated footballer. I never got the hype about him. I mean the guy has poor to no ball-control. I have never really seen him shine...and he looks really untrustworthy...

Geoff Hurst. Wasn't worthy of lacing Jimmy Greaves' boots, but got a world cup final hat-trick and he can live off it forever.
